Butoku Karate Dojo & the Butoku Kai International
Butoku Kai international (martial virtues association), founded between 780 and 806 A.D. by the 50th emperor of Japan, is the oldest martial arts organization in the world. The Butoku kai was established to provide instruction in all martial arts to the classical warriors of ancient Japan. The Butoku Kai is responsible for standardizing martial arts technique, instructors, ranking, and uniforms and licensing. The Butoku Kai is also responsible for the introduction of the martial arts into all aspects of Japans educational system.
Under the direction of Master Richard Kim (1917-2001), 10th degree, the Butoku Kai became an international organization establishing branches in France, Germany, Canada, Spain, and the United States. The Butoku Kai is dedicated to preserving the history, philosophy, traditions and spirit of the ancient martial arts. With over 70 years of martial arts experience, Master Richard Kim traveled extensively passing his knowledge to many dedicated martial artists all over the world. It was in 1959 when Master Richard Kim moved from Japan to the United States to promote the growth of the martial arts worldwide.
With Master Richard Kim’s death in 2001 the Butoku Kai U.S.A. falls under the direction of Sensei Brian Ricci. Named successor by Master Richard Kim, Sensei Ricci is one of his first and highest ranking students. As a result of this exciting new leadership, Butoku Kai of Michigan is determined as ever to spread the positive message of the Martial Arts. The Butoku Karate Dojo is the newest addition to join the quest. Located in Macomb Township at 21-mile and Garfield, Butoku Karate Dojo & Sensei John Wasilina, 4th degree black belt and 20 year veteran of the Martial Arts, will strive to bring to its surrounding community the principles set forth by the Butoku Kai U.S.A. As a traditional Martial Arts school, developing your character is just as important as developing your skill. As the fourth school to open in the metro Detroit area, Butoku Karate Dojo is proud to join a strong affiliation of professional Martial Arts schools.
